Rue de l'Horloge, Rouen. c.1915. Etching and drypoint. 12 7/8 x 7 7/8 (sheet 18 7/8 x 13 1/2). A rich impression with plate tone and drypoint burr, printed on cream wove paper. Slight foxing in the left-hand margin; other wise fine condition. A large, dramatic sweeping view of the landscape, town and castle. Signed and titled in pencil. $200.
Affleck was a Scottish painter and etcher born in Ayr who specialised in architectural subjects. Ranked with Hedley Fitton and Axel Haig he also produced a few landscape and topographical scenes. He settled in London having spent a lot of time travelling extensively and living for long periods in England, Belgium, France and Spain. Affleck etched many views in England, Holland, Italy, Belgium, and in America. Around 1910 Affleck moved permanently to France. He exhibited at the RSA and RA between 1904 and 1923.
