An important American printmaker, painter and illustrator, James Edward Allen , printmaker, painter and illustrator, studied a at the Art Academy in Chicago, and at the Art Students League and the Hans Hoffman School in Manhattan. His instructors included Joseph Pennell, Robert Brackman, Robert Philipp, William Auerbach-Levy and Arshile Gorky. Allen began his career as an illustrator, and and created his fine prints during the 1930's - 1940's.

James E. Allen was a full member of the Salmagundi Club, the New Rochelle Art Association, the Society of Etchers in New York, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Society of Illustrators, New York, and the Philadelphia Society of Etchers. Today his art is represented in such collections as the Brooklyn Museum, the Cincinnati Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Library of Congress.
