Rieuse (Laughing Girl). 1897. Duotone lithograph. 13 7/8 x 10 1/2 (sheet 16 1/8 x 12). As published in L'Estampe Moderne No. 2 (June, 1897), with their blindstamp of a woman's head, lower right. Signed in the stone. $300.

L'Estampe Moderne appeared each month as a portfolio of 4 original lithographs, priced at 3 francs 50 centimes. Each print bears the blind stamp of a woman's head lower right.

Born in Paris, he studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs under Laemlein and at the Beaux-Arts, Paris, under Aimé Millet and Alexandre Cabanel, but dropped out when he became deaf. Berton continued his artistic education alone, visiting the museums of Paris. Armand Berton exhibited etchings and lithographs at various Paris Salons from 1875 to 1921.
