Born in New Zeland, he came to Europe in 1908 and was educated in England. Initially he studied architecture; but pursued painting and engraving instead. He lived in Brussels and Paris. He was a member of La Gravure Originale Belge, and the Society of Wood Engravers in London, as well as several groups of artists in Paris. Most of his engravings were done for books. The Forest Pool is an independent commissioned work.
