In 1861, Wilhelm I, Friedrich Ludwig of Hohenzollern (1797-1888) succeeded his as King of Prussia. He led campaigns against Poldnd, Denmark and Austria, and unified Germany. He saw himself as a modern Charlemagne (742-814) who had unified Western Europe. Here Wilhelm I, seated on a throne, holds an animal's bone on one hand and a clock in another. He is surrounded by clocks set to different times.
