This is Eby's only mezzotint. Another version of the subject is Eby's 1934 etching, September 13, 1918, St. Mihiel.
Giardina writes, "During World War I, the area between the trenches of the opposing sides was known as 'no man's land'. St. Mihiel is a town in northeastern France, and the Saint'Mihiel drive of September 1918 was an important and successful American counteroffensive against the German's."
