The sleeping man rests his head on a copy of the World newspaper. His hands are death-like. In this dramatic image, Friedlander makes a plea for the homeless.

Friedlander was born in Mitau, Latvia. 1906-12 Arrested and imprisoned by Russian authorities for anti- Czarist Political activities 1913-17. Studied art at the Academy of Rome, Italy. Befriended by Russian write Maxim Gorky 1915 began printing career 1917. Repatriated to Russia during the Kerensky regime. 1929 Emigrated to the US with the encouragement of cousin Joseph Hirshhorn 1930. Designed dustjacket for Black Manhattan by James Weldon Johnson 1934. Awarded first prize for print "Revival" at the 8th Annual Print Club of Philadelphia Exhibition. 1943 Awarded first prize for print "Spiritual" at the 17th Annual Print Club of Philadelphia Exhibition. 1947 Selected as outstanding etcher in the Britannica Book of the Year, 1947. 1960 Awarded the Lilienthal Purchase Prize by the California Society of Etchers for "Ecclesiastes". .
