He was born at Shipley in Yorkshire and educated in Cambridge. He studied art at the Royal College of Art, in Paris, and in Italy. For over thirty years he was Headmaster of the Rgent Street Polytechnic School of Art in London. He was known as an etcher as well as a painter of landscapes.
