Harding studied water colour techniques under Samuel Prout and engraving under J. Pye.In 1820, the lithographic printer, Charles Hullmandel, commissioned Harding to contribute original lithographs to his topographical series, Britannia Delineata and Voyages Pittoresques. Harding then executed his own lithographic sets, the most famous being, Sketches at Home and Abroad (1836), Park and Forest (1844), and Scotland Delineated (1852).
The town of Dorking lies in the narrow valley between the Greensand Hills to the south and the chalk hills of the North Downs.
