Earl Horter. 1881-1940.
Brandon on the James River. c. 1930. Etching. 8 1/8 x 10 3/4. Signed in pencil. $275.
Brandon, one of America's most admired works of colonial architecture, illustrates the influence of English interpretations of the designs of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. The house was built c. 1765 by Nathaniel Harrison II, for his son Benjamin Harrison. The inspiration for the house's seven-part design came from Plate III of Robert Morris's Select Architecture (1755), an English pattern book of Palladian style designs.
