Eika Kato. 1869-1942.
A Winter Evening. c. 1900. Watercolor on Japanese paper with a chrysanthemum watermark. 37 1/2 x 25 1/4. Signed "E. Kato" lower right. The shop on the right sells cigarettes. An extremely large and dramatic image in fine condition. $2,000.
Eika Kato was watercolor landscape painter. He was born in Fukui, Japan, in April, 1869. In 1886, he learned watercolor technique from Toru Azukisawa. In 1888 he went to Yokahama, where he had an atelier. In 1889 he studied Japanese style painting with Beisen Kubota. He married Kiku Tanaka in 1892. He diesd at age 74 in September, 1942, and is buried in Kuboyama cemetery. Biography courtesy of Kato.
