Eika Kato. 1869-1942.

Yuki no yougure - Snow at Dusk. c. 1920. Watercolor on Japanese paper with a chrysanthemum watermark. 37 1/2 x 25 1/4. The shop on the right sells cigarettes. An extremely large and dramatic image in fine condition, housed in a stunning 45 x 32-inch wood frame with a gold lip. Works by this short-lived artist are rare. Signed "E. Kato" lower right. $1,750.

Eika Kato was watercolor landscape painter. He was born Saichiro Katoin Fukui Japan on Apr 1, 1869. Later he adopted 'Eika Kato' as a pen name.
1886. He studied watercolor with Toru Azukisawa.
1888. He went to Yokohama.
1889. He learned Japanese style painting from Beisen Kubota
1892. He married Kiku Tanaka.
1909. He announced an exhibition of 50 watercolors.
1910. Over several decades, he painted numerous watercolors in Hong Kong.
1942. September 14. He died at age of 74, and was buried in Kuboyama cemetery.
