Yuki no yougure - Snow at Dusk. c. 1920. Watercolor on Japanese paper with a chrysanthemum watermark. 37 1/2 x 25 1/4. Original frame: 45 x 32. The shop on the right sells cigarettes. An extremely large and dramatic image in fine condition. Works by this short-lived artist are rare. Signed "K. Kato" lower right. $2,500.
Kentaro Kato was born in 1889 in Japan. Kato studied under noted American watercolorist Henry Read. Kato exhibited in the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design. He died in New York City in 1926.
