And Women Must Weep. 1937. Lithograph. Burne-Jones 113. 10 3/8 x 7 3/4 (sheet 17 x 12 1/4). Large edition published by the American Artists Group of New York. Unsigned. A fine impression in excellent condition, printed on the full sheet of white wove Rives paper with wide margins. $550.
According to Burne-Jones (page 125), "The picture presents a woman standing at the door of hier home, her head leanins disconsolately against the side of the doorway, one foot on the door know; beyone a picket fence we glimpse the figure of her husband or lover -- off to the wars. We feel the desolation that awaits the woman beyond the closed door of her home and that already is creeping into her heart. The composition is a beautifully executed and highly decorative rendering of one of the most tragic aspects of the world today."
Illustrated: Ladies Home Journal November, 1940, with the accompanying poem by Ann Batchelder, Women Must Weep.
Women must weep.
Shadows must fall
On the troubled sleep
That comes to all.
Waking, the tears
Have vanished in sleep
Forgotten the years
Women must weep.
Forget the sorrow.
Let go the deep
Fear of tomorrow
And sleep -- and sleep.
