A rich impression with plate tone, printed on cream wove paper with full margins. A large, impressive image. Signed and numbered in slightly-faded ink. $650.
Carter writes, "The departure of Columbus from Palos at dawn on September 5, 1492. The fleet was one of three ships; the nearest in the etching is the caravel, Santa Maria, in which Columbus himself sailed. A full-sized replica of the Santa Maria is used for celebrations at Palos, and was sketched by the artist in 1932 at Huelva, whic is on the opposite side of the river from Palos."
