Hardie writes, "Portrait of the artist in his first London studio (8, Wharfdale Street, Earl's Court). He is seated at a table, holing a drawing-board with his left hand; book son his right, and a porcelain etching-bath on his left. In the background, a copy of Velasquez' 'El Primo,' and, to the right, an easel, chair and printing-press."
