Edition of 600 for L'Artiste (vol IV #14, 1858) in this state. Schneiderman writes, 'In some proofs the full inscription has not been inked but is still still discernible' (p. 38). Series: Eaux-Fortes sur Paris. A rich impression printed on black/brown ink on cream laid paper. Printing fold in the left-hand margin. Circular stain verso, not showing through to the front. Collector's seal: Lugt 2743 Sir William Richard Drake (1817-1890) ( Treasurer of the Courts of First Instance (county courts), London and Oatlands Lodge, Weybridge (Surrey). The image, shows the towers of Notre Dame rising above the quai-side houses and the little bridge. In actuality, the towers in the etching are much higher than the houses, and the house facades have a dramatic sweep and curvature than contemporary photographs indicate. The shadow forming a sphinx’s head on the wall to the left of the bridge is Meryon's added symbolism.
