Piece for Tropic. 1979. Offset lithograph, four-color collage. Tropic Magazine, The Miami Herald, Dec. 30, 1979. 12 3/8 x 21 1/2. Dated and initialed in the stone. Edition of 600,000. Few lithographs from the edition have survived. $975.
Tropic is The Miami Herald's Sunday magazine. The photographs used for the four-color collage featured as that week's Tropic cover, were taken of scenes in and around Miami, FL, and the plates used to print those photographs were later requested by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and by the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum in Miami. Rauschenberg agreed to do the cover for $1,000 and specified that the money be given to Change Inc., an emergency fund for artists.
