The Meuse (Dutch & German Maas) is a major European river, rising in France and flowing through Belgium and the Netherlands before draining into the North Sea. Hardie writes, "An orange merchantman is going to pieces on the bar; boats under sail to right and left' a rowing-boat in front to the left."
