This image is based on a small oil painting entitles 'Shipping By a Breakwater,- c. 1802, by J.M.W. Turner. Short's aquatint was published in The Portfolio 19 (1889). Short thought Sea Piece to be unusual since it was done in aquatint, but hadthe qiality of a mezzotint. It was actually started in softground etching, then spirit ground aquatint, then some hand working with a punch and then the plate was run through the press in contact with coarse sand paper.
