Hardie writes, " From a sketch in oils by John Constable, R.A., in the colelction of the late Henry Vaughan, now in the National Gallery and known as 'The Gleaners.' On the back of the sketch is written: 'Brighton, looking north-east, noon.' Two windmills, one on the extreme right, are seen over the top of the down; two women are at work in the foreground to left."
