"Wivenhoe is the home of the University of Essex. The town's history involves fishing, yachts, dinghies, ships and smuggling; a pretty church, with a distinctive cupola on top of its sturdy tower, stands on the site of the first church, built in Saxon times. The streets are small and quaint, leading into each other and ending at the picturesque waterfront where fishing boats and small sailing craft bob at their moorings."

A leading English etcher, engraver and watercolourist, of the 1920's and 1930's, Douglas Ian Smart studied printmaking techniques in London, under Sir Frank Short. Smart was a member of the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers, and exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy. He etched and painted in England, France, Spain and Italy. He exhibited at Colnaghi, Chenil Gallery, Connell and Son Gallery, The Fine Art Society, the Glasgow Institute, The International Society, The Walker Gallery, the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He specialized in architectural subjects.
