The Cray is a river, rising at St. Mary Cray, near Farningham, where Sutherland moved in 1927. The sun sets behind a row of hop-poles as workers cut the corn. The evening star rises in the sky. Sutherland developed this moving image in 6 states, altering the sun and the length of its rays, removing one hop-pole and replacing it with a distant apple tree.
