This was the first of six intensely pastoral works executed between 1925 and 1927. Tassi wrote “In ‘The Village’ we have the full revelation of a new and absolutely original vision which henceforth was to remain the basis for Sutherland’s most characteristic language”.
A larger image than usual, the landscape -- rather than figures and buildings -- dominates the picture. The Village is one of Sutherland’s last pastoral plates that reflects the dense style and pastoral subject matter of Samuel Palmer. Sutherland's later work became more abstract and "modern".
