The image of a falcon on a pine branch, with the New Year sun rising behind, was a traditional subject of the Kano school. Hiroshige designed several of these kakemono-e which were inexpensive substitutes for the paintings that usually hung in the tokonoma, the alcove that is found in traditional Japanese houses.
