Pickled Herring Wharf. 1925. Etching with drypoint. 6 7/8 x 10 1/8 (sheet 10 1/8 x 12 15/16). Edition 30. The etching was awarded a silver medal from the Printmakers Society of California in 1930. A very rich impression printed on cream wove paper with deckle edges on three sides.. Signed and annotated in pencil. A Whistlerian image, reminiscent of the Lime-Burner in the Thames set. $650.
Pickled Herring Wharf, is by the Thames in the Pool of London. Winkler traveled to London 1925 - 1928, wherehe made etchings and drawings mostly along the Thames River. He was known as "The Man Who Drew on Brass."
John W. Winkler was born in Austria but moved to California when he was young. He studied under Frank van Sloun at the California Institute of Arts and published his first original etching in 1915. He established a reputation for his etchings, that were primarily scenes of the San Francisco area. His etchings were often compared to the work of Whistler, particularly the 'French Set' and 'Thames Set'.
