Tower Bridge was built by Sir John Wolf Barry and opened in 1894. It is known as the water gate of London and is the last bridge across the river. The bascules of Tower Bridge are raised to allow shipping to pass. Wyllie spent several years as a young man living on a boat on the Thames, which he converted into a floating studio. Tower Bridge was not long completed when Wyllie finished this watercolour, but it quickly became one of his favourite subjects. To order or to be placed on the email list, please contact Jane Allinson.
