Notre Dame de la Fin des Terres. (Our Lady of the End of the World). Woodblock cut by Georges Aubert after a drawing by Rouault for the book Cirque de l'Étoile Filante (Circus of the Shining Star). (Paris, 1938), page 155. 6 x 7 3/4. Signed and dated in the block. $7,000.
Miserere et Guerre.
This unique set was Rouault's personal copy containing his annotations and revisions to the titles and order of the prints in the series. The revisions appear to be made at the end of May and beginning of June, 1939. At that time, Rouault and Suarès were meeting to coordinate work on the the two books, Miserere and Guerre. Rouault was to finalize titles or legends for the prints, and Suarès for the texts he was supposed to write.In Rouault-Suarès published correspondence: on May 31st 1939, Rouault writes "je vais mettre titres ou légendes...." Vollard died a few weeks later and the project was halted.
The set was sold to Father Andrew Kelly by the artist via his New York broker, Kleeman Galleries in 1948. The purchase price was $5,000, which was a very considerable sum at the time. Miserere et Guerre was acquired by Father Kelly for the Catholic Lending Library of Hartford. The art collection is now being dispersed.
The series was exhibited at the Morgan Memorial Museum in Hartford in April and May, 1949. Subsequently it was exhibited at Yale in New Haven.
This unique set was used to illustrate the book by Frank and Dorothy, George Rouault's Miserere (Milwaukee: The Bruce Publishing Company, 1964).
