William Merritt Chase (1849 - 1916) was an American impressionist painter and a powerful teacher. . A school with his name his name developed into the Parson's Institute. From 1891 - 1902 he conducted a pioneering role in outdoor American art at his summer school at Shinnecock Hills estate, here notable students like Edward Hopper, George Bellows, and Georgia O'Keeffe studied.
This rare group of four original cyanotypes (c. 1900) documenting Chase's influential teaching methods, capturing him critiquing pupils, sketching out-of-doors, and engaging with students in both outdoor and indoor classroom settings at Shinnecock Hills.
